NPA
Seeks 'A' for Education
|
Return
to Current Issue
This
year's NPA will feature two exciting education workshops. The first
"Rebuild America's Schools" will focus on the ongoing fight to win Federal
funds to repair old schools and build new ones.
The workshop will feature allies from last year's fight, including Congressional
staffers from Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) and Rep. Nancy Johnson's (R-CT)
offices who supported school construction last year. Leaders will also
celebrate their victory of $1.3 billion dollars in emergency repair
money, and lay out a strategy for how to access this money locally.
Groups will also continue to push for the the need to pass the federal
legislation$24 billion.
The second workshop "Straight A's: Access, Accountability, and Achievement"
will expose tensions in the public education system. While overcrowding
and repair issues still continue to plague our schools, teachers are
working without adequate support from school systems. Public education
is supposed to ensure that everyone is given an equal chance at having
a foundation for good choices in life. NPA leaders from Los Angeles
to New York will testify about their successes and struggles on this
issue. NPA leadership will attempt to convince the Secretary of Education,
Rod Paige, to take a tour of the country to see first-hand view of America's
schools.
