At a High School Gymnasium in Columbia, Missouri, the energy was electric! No, it wasn’t a big utilities meeting, the buzz came from an alternative source of energy—PEOPLE POWER!

Community members gathered to celebrate the third anniversary of Grass Roots Organizing (GRO) in mid-October. The organization was formed to give tools and leadership opportunities to families living in poverty to fight injustices, influence policy debates and offer solutions to reduce poverty and prejudice.

The dazzling festivities and success of the day was a reflection of all the people who made the celebration possible. Attendees enjoyed music, food, conversation, chants, and door prizes as well as a silent auction and formal program with award presentation.

The keynote speaker was Missouri State Representative Vicky Riback Wilson. She presented GRO with a Missouri House of Representatives Proclamation recognizing the work and mission of promoting and benefiting the well being of Missouri families. GRO Board members Carletta Connor and Kaye Miller and members Dorothy Thomas, Eugene Elkin, Patricia Knapp, accepted the honor.

The anniversary received enormous media coverage, including television. GRO leaders told reporters why they got involved with the organization, the wins that they have been a part of, and about the power of collective voice and action.
