Sunflower
Targets 3 Hits in One Day

to Current Issue
WICHITA-Forty
cars carrying 125 people streaked across the city on a Saturday morning
in late January, to carry out three hits in one day.
In the largest caravan Sunflower Community Action had ever put together,
other cars pulled to the side of the road thinking Sunflower's group
was a funeral procession.
The targets had all previously ignored Sunflower's invitations to meetings.
A state senator and the local chairman of the Democratic Party were
the focus on immigration issues and the president of the Wichita Chamber
of Commerce was marked on the issue of predatory lending.
Sunflower has been focusing on the Kansas Department of Motor Vehicles
for denying non-English speaking Hispanics access to driver's licenses
or state identification.
While State Sen. Paul Feliciano was not home, he called Sunflower soon
after the action complaining that he did not appreciate the community
groups' tactics. But he did agree to a meeting. Democratic Chairman
Tom Sawyer did not respond to Sunflower after the hit.
Sunflower also delivered a letter to the home of F. Tim Witsman, president
of the local chamber of commerce, demanding that he remove Conseco from
the chamber of commerce.
Conseco is a financial-holding company that deals in predatory lending
practices. Witsman called Sunflower back the next day and committed
to sending a letter to Conseco about Sunflower's concern over the company's
predatory practices.
